The Big Drive Down & Healthy Food Options

Hope you’re enjoying the various bursts of September heat. My two favourite months are May and September and both so far have not let me down. But guess who the pessimist was and put her fans, including the dog’s cool matt, in the loft?!

Thank you, My Weekly for this week giving us five pages of sound advice when it comes to our health and wellbeing. Ultra-processed food is the scourge of the world and we are the generation who have seen it happen, been part of it and now have to rid of ourselves of its toxicity to make a stand for future generations who are already on the path of illnesses because of the constant ‘empty’ food being placed in their mouths.

Yesterday, after hiring a van with my sister to bring back to London our childhood memories from our Staffordshire home, exhausted we stopped off for a well-deserved service station snack on the M40. Oxford Services is a good one, clean toilets, nice places to sit and a wide range of food which includes healthy options. But everywhere I looked the longest queue’s were for ‘dishes of death’. Wendy went to get coffee and I chose Subway because I know they do a tuna salad and for Wendy a vegan wrap. As I got near to the counter, I was standing next to a young girl and her boyfriend clutching a full fat Coca-Cola, large packet of Doritos while ordering their main meal of ‘The Baller’ which lived up to its name. I watched as a very long white baguette was filled with pork and beef meatballs, pepperoni, something called Monterey Jack cheddar, fried crispy onions, peppers, and a thick mayonnaise type sauce. Looking at it I’m not sure it had ever seen a couple of fresh egg yolks, extra virgin olive oil, Dijon mustard, lemon and white wine vinegar.

The surrounding bread was then squashed down by its maker and because some of it was oozing out rolled in paper to keep its content in order and proudly handed over.

These companies say they are providing what the public wants and because the public want, they will provide. This unhealthy cycle will remain until the public say:

“No, I respect my body and want to live a better healthier, brighter life not weighed down by these arterial disease ridden foods you are wafting in front of my nose with your stupid advertising. I’m better than this, I’m better than you and all your shareholders so if you don’t mind I’m going to go my own way which is eating food in its original form that’s fresh and had very little tampering with.”

Believe me if these companies start losing money, they will change, it’s a big old tanker to turn around but look at what public pressure has done for recycling, animal testing and compassion in farming. NONE a done deal and far from perfect but better than we were. Please save this magazine, these 5 pages are your ‘at a glance’  food health bible.
