The Podcast Explosion

How can I be in the media business have contributed to many, but as a listener, been late to the Podcast Explosion? Well I am and I know why. I was totally overwhelmed with the amount out there, I saw them as another confusing choice I had to make and frankly everywhere we look these days there are multiple choices of everything from bread to shampoos, health supplements and now podcasts. In the early days I dipped into a few and couldn’t get my head around some of the inane drivel being pushed out, one was advertised as, like sitting around the table with your two best friends, well frankly after fifteen minutes I’d prefer to have spent time with my two best friends. Another one was a group of women well known women attempting too be a more daring ‘Loose Women’ but after a few expletives you’d never hear on ITV daytime the shock was over and unlike the TV version it was apparent they had no content or professional control

But there’s good news, the public have sorted out the wheat from the chaff (you always do) and now our choices are not less, but of a better quality. If you haven’t dipped your toe in podcasting pool now is the time to do it. Google ‘Podcasts’ and search the list, there will be names you recognise and feel comfortable with so it’s a good place start.

You can pop into Joana Lumley’s home and hear her, and her professional musician Husband Stephen Barlow talk about their shared passion for music. One of my personal favourites is ‘Desert Island Discs’ Noel Gallagher’s was a revelation. Crime Junkie picks over true unsolved crimes, its Midsummer Murders on steroids and who couldn’t love John Bishop in conversation with everyone from Joan Collins to Jeremy Corbyn and Chris Evens is a fine inquisitive interviewer.

But one you might pass on because you don’t know their names is ‘Two Women Chatting’ but you will know many of the people they talk to from Judy Dench to Carolyn Harris MP to good old me.

The two women redefining life over 50, are Liz and Michelle they say midlife isn’t just about the menopause (although it’s up there) but a time of adventure, change, reset, opportunities and challenges. They have over 30 episodes under their belt chatting about ‘boomerang kids’, diet failures, pro-ageing, travel, changing relationships, new jobs and you’ll definitely feel like you’re on the sofa with them so enjoy their warmth.

Finally, a Valentine gadget, which is a life saver, my ability to misplace keys is legendry I keep all on the same ring with a large red heart so I see them in my bag. I think Mark bought me an Apple Air Tag, so he didn’t have to hear me scream loudly “Anyone seen my keys”. This little gadget linked to my phone, knows exactly where they are, its like playing hotter, hotter, colder, colder on my phone with the prize being my keys. Adore technology when it works, and this does.

Love,

Anthea X
