Goodbye Amy

Amy_Winehouse_Panto

I have been following the tragic news of Amy Winehouse’s death. You always had a fear that this was going to be the way her life would end.

I met her she over New Year 2010 when she was visiting her friend Anthony Kavanagh who was staring alongside me, Bobby Davro and US Actor Micky Rooney in Milton Keynes. Her visit was much reported in the press on TV even making it over the pond due to the aforementioned playing Baron Hard-Up. To cut a very long story short she was asked to leave the theatre for heckling (I thought that’s what you did at a Panto?) and in the process she took a swipe at the front of house manager. Now I’m not condoning her actions but if you saw the size of him next to her you would laugh and the fact he called the police was embarrassing. Still, by the time the story got out the exaggeration machine had been working overtime and it bore little resemblance to the small kafuffle that actually took place. During the interval she was in Kav’s dressing room which was next to mine and somehow she had cut herself... so in my red Fairy Godmother costume I went in with my first aid kit to clean her up. It was actually microphone tape and cotton wool and some cleanser (even I’m not that organised). I always take people as I find them as God knows I’ve had enough gossips that have opinions on me and we’ve never met. In that little room I met Amy;  tiny, sweet, pretty, funny, and when she wrapped her arms around you she was like a child you just wanted to hold and protect. She was grateful for my attempts to clean her up and later went back to her seat with her supposed ‘Minder’ in tow.

Her life was a pantomime full of goodies, baddies, weakness and strength. I felt a real pain and sadness when I learnt she’d died, but I believe that with the legacy of her music and the foundation her father is going to create in Amy’s name to help other drug addicts fight this destructive path, there will somehow be a happy ending.

A Little Grey Blast from the Past

on Friday, 22 July 2011.

Back in the day I used to model and put together a collection of clothes for Littlewoods Catalogue. Being the clothes fanatic and shopper I am this was the dream job and I loved every minute of the process. Funny now to see some of these items appear on Ebay. The little grey dress advertised I still have.

My nephew Jack played the part of Mr Brownlow in the Year 6 production of Oliver at The Vineyard School. Apparently he enjoyed playing the part of a posh gentleman. You know what they say... start as you mean to go on!

Hanging_Baskets

Have you put up hanging baskets this year? With moving house I was a little late but they are blooming and I’m so proud of them. This year I’ve gone for a selection of plants but normally I play safe and stick to Geraniums. The key to success is in the watering as they dry out so easily. My whole family are on pain of death not to let them die of thirst while I am away... even from Canada I’m ringing up with “Have you watered the hanging baskets?”

I went with Grant, my friend Radio Presenter Gillian Gaunlett and Russ Lindsay to see Take That at Wembley Stadium – A truly amazing concert and I can’t wait to get it on DVD to live the evening all over again.

Nobody waits for ‘Take Your Dog To Work Day’ here at Cineflix, the production company who make Dinner Party Wars. There’s always a dog in the office or on set. This is Grace - PA to Corbin and me - with her little dog, Honey.

A two week trip back to the UK has been the highlight of the past month for me. After the oppressive city heat of Toronto, slipping back into the more moderate climes of home was very welcome indeed. It was a jam-packed fortnight, with lots of catching up with friends and family, including a trip to Hampton Court Flower Show with my parents. It was an excellent show and we all had a marvellous time.

My friend Philippa Forrester stayed with Grant and me during the Flower Show as she was doing an environmental project there for Anglian Windows. She and her wildlife cameraman husband do a TV show from their home, called Halcyon River Diaries. Their three boys are also involved with the programme. It’s aprecious piece of television.

Dads_MG

While mum and dad were visiting me I took the opportunity to take dad out for a ride in the old 1938 MG TB that he used to ride about in when he was at Birmingham University. Grant tracked down the very car that dad used to own and bought it for me as a 40th birthday present. Dad doesn’t get the chance to see the car too often, so we enjoyed going out for a quick spin for old time’s sake.

Grant_Bike_Ride

Grant has recently completed the London to Paris cycle ride for the third year running, to raise money for the charity Debra. He rode 330 miles in two and a half days, which is no mean feat. He says it gets tougher, because the standard is getting higher and higher as each year goes by. It was the first year that I wasn’t able to be there, because of work commitments. The beauty of modern technology is that I was still able to follow Grant’s progress via Twitter and Facebook, and he sent me photographs from along the route. It almost felt like I was there with him.
